Steamboat boys lax easily handles Vail Mountain

Ben Ingersoll

— The Steamboat Springs High School boys lacrosse team bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to Aspen in a big way Friday night at Vail Mountain School, and now the Sailors’ attention quickly goes to what comes on the Front Range Saturday afternoon.

Steamboat rolled through the Gore Rangers, 18-3, behind a senior-driven performance. Will Petersen led with a game-high four goals and a pair of assists. Both Andrew Firestone and Willy Gunn recorded a hat trick, and Spencer Petersen netted two goals. The Sailors as a team had eight goals in the fourth quarter alone.

Senior goalie Aaron VanderGraaff nearly went the distance in front of the cage, swallowing 10 Vail Mountain shots.

The win was fairly routine, but the big challenge now is keeping the excited Sailors focused for Saturday’s road contest at Cheyenne Mountain.

“We spread out the goals a bit tonight,” Steamboat coach Jay Lattimore said. “It was a good game. I’m just making sure the guys don’t get their egos too big. We have a good opponent coming up.”

Cheyenne Mountain (5-2 overall) had the Sailors all but beaten in last spring’s matchup between the two schools. That was before Steamboat dropped in four goals and stunned the Indians, 14-13.

“We just have to stay humble,” Will Petersen said. “We have to play as a team out there and not be too individual. We have to have each other’s backs. If we play as team, we’ll win tomorrow.”

Faceoff between Steamboat and Cheyenne Mountain is at 2 p.m.
