Hello, fellow Coloradans. I am running to be your next state treasurer.

Many of you know that I have more than 30 years experience running two successful businesses, working in the public sector in the Departments of Treasury and Homeland Security and, of course, Congress.

Treasurer isn’t the most glamorous job, it’s not a high-profile position and almost 60 percent of Coloradans don’t know who the treasurer is. You might ask why I would want to be the state treasurer.

I would be honored to be your next state treasurer because I have a passion for public service, the vision to help lead our state forward and the experience to make sound financial decisions.

Colorado’s treasurer manages an investment pool of approximately $6 billion — investments that fund K-12 education, higher education, transportation, the Colorado Public Employees’ Retirement Association and other issues important to our quality of life. Given that sizable responsibility, the office has one of the smallest staffs in state government.

While it makes fiscal sense to keep government lean, the treasurer has to show up every day and be innovative in order to get the biggest bang for the least amount of buck. After running two successful businesses, I have the experience to do just that.

As treasurer, I want to gather the best ideas from across the country and our state, from Republicans and Democrats, and the public and private sectors, to brainstorm new ideas that bolster our education dollars and improve our transportation system. We can do more with less if we think outside the box and work together.

Another important role of the treasurer is accountability. The treasurer holds the public’s trust in investing the state’s financial resources. Right now, the Treasurer’s Office doesn’t show where it is investing your money, how it is being spent and what the next steps are. I will change this — I will dig deep into our accounts and release a detailed report every year highlighting our investments and sharing our returns.

This is an important job that needs leadership, and I ask for your vote Nov. 4. You can learn more at http://www.betsymarkey.com.
