The colors of spring are arriving in Steamboat Springs every day, keeping the crew at Windemere Landscape and Garden Center up to their noses in flowers, bushes, trees and shrubs.
She said the shipments began arriving in mid-April and have not let up. The past couple of weeks, the customers have started arriving to check out what the garden center has to offer and to start doing some early season planting.
“This time of the year, it’s always fun to plant spring blooming flowers,” Teixeira said.
She said irises and lilacs are among the early season favorites and that it’s time to start working on herbs and vegetables. However, she warns wannabe gardeners to start them inside and wait a few weeks before planting them outside.
Teixeira has owned Windemere for 16 years along with Mark Tarzian.
“Spring for us is a really busy time of the year,” Teixeira said. "It’s a very gratifying time of the year, very busy and full of lots of color and flowers and plants. It’s a great time to put together the greenhouse, the garden shop and set up the trees and shrubs. It’s like opening up a new business every season, and it’s very exciting.”
Teixeira said people can plant perennials, if hardened off, as soon as they can dig in the ground. She also recommends amending the soil. Teixeira added that she would hold off on planting annuals, but she encourages people to buy them because there is a good selection.
Teixeira said they start early at Windemere because it takes so long to get the garden center together, but she wants to be ready for customers looking to improve their yards and gardens.
“It’s great to work with our customers because they're always excited about everything we bring into our garden center," she said.
Teixeira also encourages people to get out and enjoy the spring.
“Most important thing is amending the soil with organic material,” Teixeira said. “Creating a plan for the garden, taking care of their lawn, deadheading weeding and looking forward to another great season.”
