Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis coach John Aragon knew this mid-season stretch wouldn’t be easy, but he isn’t discouraged.

The Sailors traveled to Fort Collins on Friday, losing 6-1 against what Aragon called a “very solid” Sabercats squad.

No. 3 singles player Maddie Labor grabbed Steamboat’s lone victory of the day, a 6-4, 6-3 win.

No. 1 singles Ellie Bender lost, 6-0, 6-0, and No. 2 singles Kira Lorenzen was dropped, 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles play, Steamboat’s No. 1 group of Hanna Haggarty and Emmie Thompson lost, 6-2, 6-0. The Sailors’ No. 2 doubles team of Sabina Berend and Maddie Thompson lost, 6-1, 6-1. No. 3 doubles of Jessica Ross and Sydney Boyd fell, 6-1, 6-2.

“Fossil Ridge is one of the top 5A teams in the state,” Aragon said. “As a team, we need to keep practicing and playing with a purpose and see if we can close that gap. They’re a very good team.”

Steamboat resumes play Saturday against Thompson Valley.
