The Steamboat Springs Chix with Stix hockey team wraps up its season Saturday, and the squad is hoping to go out with a bang.
The team, 6-2 heading into a pair of weekend games, plays it final home game of the season at 5:45 p.m. Saturday at Howelsen Ice Arena in Steamboat Springs against Breckenridge.
It’s been a strong but different kind of season for the team as it’s sustained what longtime veteran Diane Dwire described as a transition year.
Unsure how much turnout there would be for the typical November-to-March slate the team plays, organizers opted to scale back, stay out of its typical division and play an independent schedule that started in January.
As it has turned out, a few new faces helped bolster the program's numbers, and the results on the ice have been positive.
“Some players wanted to take a year off. Some were pregnant and some moved out of town,” Dwire said. “We weren’t sure we’d have enough depth to commit to a full traveling schedule so we figured in order to try to recruit some young blood we needed a little more time.
“We’ve found a few new players who have turned out to be really good, and it’s turned into a pretty good season.”
Abby Kurtz-Phelan has led the team with eight goals and 12 points, but she’s been far from alone, one of eight players to find the net this season and one of 13 to tally a point.
Saturday’s game will serve as a fan appreciation night, promising goodies for those who show up to cheer.
The event is free.
