Steamboat Springs A trio of Soroco High School girls basketball players and a pair of Rams boys hoops players were named last week as 2A Western Slope first-team all league. The Rams’ coaches announced the awards at this week’s winter sports banquet.
The Soroco girls — which advanced to the regional tournament second round with a 16-8 record — had freshman DaKota Bruner, junior Jessica Rossi and senior Jacey Schlegel as first-team all-leaguers.
“That was awesome,” Rams girls coach David Bruner said about having three on the first team. “That solidified the kind of year the girls had.”
Rossi led the three in scoring, averaging nearly 14 points per game to go along with 12 rebounds per contest. Bruner added another 12.5 points per game and Schlegel, the team’s lone senior, added another 12 points for the Rams.
The Rams boys finished 10-10 this season and had seniors Matt Regan and Ryan Jeep on the Western Slope League first team. Senior Bjorn Carlson was named all-league honorable mention.
Jeep led all 2A Western Slope League players in scoring with 18.4 points per game. Jeep added another nine rebounds on average. Regan missed a few games to injury but was second on the team with 10.7 points per game. Carlson averaged eight points for Soroco.
The Rams girls squad also was awarded the Colorado High School Activities Association Les Schwab Academic Team Championship Award for having a team cumulative GPA higher than 3.6.
CHSAA all-academic first-team boys included Carlson, Jeep, and wrestler Cody Constine. Soroco had Hayley Johnson, Alexandrea Bryant, Kellen Garrity, Schlegel and Rossi on the girls all-academic first-team.
