Douglas L. Brown is Routt County's new emergency communications director. He replaces Tim McMenamin, who announced in January that he would resign, effective at the end of this month for health reasons, after four years in the post.

County Manager Tom Sullivan said Tuesday that Brown begins his new job Monday. He added that Brown performed well during an interview with a committee of eight local professionals, including Routt County Board of Commissioners Chairman Tim Corrigan. Brown was among 12 applicants for the job, and two who were invited to Steamboat Springs for interviews. Based on his extensive professional experience, he will be paid an annual salary of $85,030, representing Step Five of the county’s Tier Two pay scale for department managers.

Brown was in the Army for 20 years and left as an E-7 communications chief. He was the director of 911 Communications for Gadsden County, Fla., for 15 years and most recently was the director of Central Communications for Columbia County, Fla., for five years.

Sullivan said that after Brown retired from Columbia County in 2012, he soon realized that he missed the work and began applying for other positions.

In an email interview Tuesday, Brown said that despite his years in Florida, he is prepared for Routt County winters.

“I am very used to the climate of mountain areas,” he wrote. “While in the military I was stationed in Alaska for three years, and Germany for seven years.”

Brown said he was impressed with the friendliness of people he encountered here while pursuing the job with Routt County.

“I really consider it an honor to be able to serve the people of Routt County as the communications director,” he wrote. “Over the past year I have been through a number of interviews, and not one has come close to matching the kindness I've received from the people of Steamboat Springs.”

Thanks a lot Routt County. If you only had 12 applicants that means you only had to send out 11 rejection notices. Perhaps you're either saving money on paper and stamps or mine got lost in the mail.
