Hayden High School Travel Club is conducting a shoe collection drive Monday and Wednesday to raise funds for a trip to Spain and Italy while benefiting microenterprise ventures in developing nations and keeping old shoes out of local landfills.
Individuals can help by donating gently worn, used shoes.
Collections will take place at 10 a.m. Monday at the Wal-Mart in Craig and at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Wal-Mart in Steamboat Springs.
By donating your gently worn, used shoes to the Hayden High School Travel Club, your shoes are given a second chance to make a difference. All donated shoes will be redistributed to microenterprise partners through Funds2Orgs and used in developing nations for impoverished people to start, maintain, and grow a unique business opportunity to feed, clothe and house their families.
“We are very excited to be conducting this shoe drive in Hayden,” Jenny Lewis, Travel Club adviser said. “This campaign will raise funds that directly benefit the students and be used for their trip to Spain and Italy. The additional advantages of diverting shoes from the waste stream to create commerce and sustainability in peoples’ lives make this a win-win for everyone.”
She said the club’s goal is to collect 1,000 pairs of shoes.
If you or a local organization are interested in learning more about the shoe drive, contact Lewis by phone at 970-276-3761 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Earth Hour event to focus on issues of global concern
In its fifth year of celebrating Earth Hour, the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council is continuing to expand upon this global event with another celebration from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
Before this year’s event, the Emerald Mountain School will host a student show on issues of global concern, highlighting students’ individual research-based projects on environmental issues, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at the school, after which the students will make an illuminated march down to the Earth Hour event at Howelsen Hill.
The Earth Hour event will include an hour of fun, music, fire as well as a candlelight luminaria parade.
