Sailors soccer suffers rough loss at Grand Junction

— Steamboat Springs High School girls soccer coach Rob Bohlmann said it best: Saturday at Grand Junction was a good effort with a rough result.

Playing against 5A Southwestern League-leading Grand Junction, the Sailors couldn’t overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit after a flurry of Tigers goals in the final 40 minutes, losing 7-2.

“They were a solid team,” Bohlmann said. “A very athletic and pretty powerful squad. Several of their goals came from distance. They were able to strike the ball really well.”

Steamboat cut into Grand Junction’s lead early in the second half off a Sara Stout goal to make it 2-1. But the Tigers took control from there, allowing just one other goal off Steamboat’s Alice Holmquist.

The Sailors are now 3-3 on the season.

“We pretty much for the 80 minutes were in it the entire time,” Bohlmann said. “We just had moments where we just kind of exposed ourselves. Just moments here and there we have to clean up.”

Steamboat again will be on the road in a week with an away date at Battle Mountain. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. Saturday.
