Soroco’s Bjorn Carlson and Micah Gibbons and Steamboat’s Alexandra Tumminello highlighted Routt County athletes Friday with their early-season performances. Carlson grabbed second in high jump clearing 5-feet-10-inches, and Tumminello used a strong final kick to win the girls 800 meters. Gibbons won boys pole vault.

Sailors coach Erik Ramstad said Tumminello ran a smart race, avoiding a steady headwind behind the pack and punching in a 100-meter dash to win it in 2 minutes, 37.84 seconds.

“It was a fun mix of those new to track and those veterans who had been around for a bit,” Ramstad said. “Everyone had a great start to the year. A few people have personal bests already.”

Soroco’s Hailey Johnson opened the day with an eighth-place finish in the girls 100-meter dash, crossing in 14.13 seconds. Steamboat’s Meg O’Connell nearly hit her personal best in the girls 1,600 meters, finishing 12th in 6 minutes, 16.9 seconds. O’Connell was followed by Hayden’s Laura Johnson in the mile, who finished 14th.

Hailey Johnson scored another top-10 finish in the girls 200-meter dash, grabbing eighth in 29.22 seconds.

Soroco’s Cassi Constine narrowly missed a medal finish in the girls 400-meter dash, crossing in 1 minute, 8.5 seconds for fourth. Johnson was 11th in the same event.

In the field events, Hayden’s Jessica Hockett grabbed 10th in the girls discus with a throw of 76 feet, 1 inch and was 11th in shot put. Soroco’s Kali Constine was fifth in the girls high jump, and Steamboat’s Temsup Techarukpong took fifth in the girls long jump.

Soroco’s Leah Walorski took eighth in triple jump

On the boys side, Steamboat’s 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relays took 10th. Soroco grabbed 10th in the 4x800-meter relay.

Soroco’s Ian Palyo was 10th in the boys discus with a throw of 101 feet, 3.5 inches. Teammate Micah Gibbons was 12th in the same event.

Sailors’ Bruce Darcy missed a bronze medal in the boys shot put by an inch with a throw of 30 feet, 9 inches for fourth.
