— Steamboat’s Sue Birch was given the American Medical Association’s Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service for her work as the executive director of the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing.

Birch was given the AMA’s top government service award for her achievements in reforming the state’s Medicaid system and transforming its health care delivery and payment system, according to a news release.

The Colorado Medical Society nominated Birch.

“Sue Birch is among the country’s most accomplished leaders for implementing community-based, patient and primary-care-centered innovations that improve outcomes and reduce costs,” Colorado Medical Society President John L. Bender said in the release. “She is held in the highest regard as a trusted and skilled leader who has pulled together the fragmented and costly Medicaid program into a lean, viable, high-performing system.”

“Through her leadership, Susan Birch has demonstrated a deep commitment to improving the health and well-being of Colorado residents,” AMA Chair David O. Barbe said in the release. “It is my pleasure to honor Susan with this award for her tireless efforts and dedication to bettering health outcomes for patients and reducing health care costs through collaborative, community-centric partnerships across the health care system.”

Birch received the award during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
