Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team had to dig deep, and playing Friday against Aspen the Sailors dug up a big early-season win.
2014 Sailors girls tennis schedule
Steamboat won five of seven matches Friday to take a dual from Aspen.
“We had to really play well,” Steamboat coach John Aragon said. “Aspen was a solid, solid team. We had to come from behind in several matches. It was really good to see the girls get the job done.”
Steamboat got wins from Kira Lorenzen at No. 2 singles, who bounced back after losing the first set to get a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory and from Maddie Labor, who overcame an illness to win 6-3, 6-4.
“Maddie played extremely well for her condition and she beat a very good No. 3 singles player from Aspen,” Aragon said. “Then Kira, I was really proud of how she made adjustments. She started picking on the girl’s weakness and kept her composure. That was huge.”
Steamboat also got victories at No. 1 doubles with Hanna Haggarty and Emmie Thompson, winning 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-1, No. 2 doubles, from Sabina Berend and Maddie Thompson, 6-2, 6-4, and No. 4 doubles, Shannon Ross and Jessie Selby, which won 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Steamboat is back in action today against Fruita Monument.
