Lanning recognized as WSL honorable mention all-league; Soroco girls at state Friday

— Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball’s second-leading scorer Matthew Lanning was recognized earlier this week as a 4A Western Slope All-League honorable mention performer alongside teammate Garrett Bye.

Lanning averaged nearly nine points per game for the Sailors and scored in double figures for 10 of Steamboat’s 25 games, including a season-high 18 against Montrose on Dec. 13. Against Western League opponents, Lanning scored in double figures seven times and had a game-high 15 points in the Sailors’ double-overtime win over Sierra in the first round of the state playoffs.

Lanning, just a junior, did the bulk of his season-long damage off the bench as one of head coach Luke DeWolfe’s key reserve contributors. He also snagged 110 rebounds — second on the team behind Bye.
