Community Ag Alliance: Naked and hungry

— Where would you be without agriculture? Naked and hungry.

While we are having some fun with that question and answer, our intention is to get all of us to think about the connection we have to agriculture.

Community Agriculture Alliance

This weekly column about agriculture issues is written by area farmers, ranchers and policymakers. It publishes on Fridays in the Steamboat Today. Read more columns here.

Take a minute and think about a typical morning — as you wake up under sheets and blankets made of fiber from animals and plants, get dressed in clothes made from more fiber, drink coffee or tea raised by a farmer, eat eggs from chickens a farmer cared for and bread made with grains grown by a farmer. It goes on and on throughout every meal (don’t forget all the fruits, vegetables and meat we eat!) every day.

As a way of connecting all of us to agriculture, Community Agriculture Alliance is coordinating several events and activities during National Ag Week. From March 23 to 29, National Ag Week is a time to recognize and celebrate the importance of agriculture. Agriculture provides most everything we eat, drink and wear on a daily basis. With our theme “Naked and Hungry,” the goal is to connect all of us with agriculture.

Join us in celebrating National Ag Week. Some local events include:

• Shop Local: Local products market on March 23 at The Steamboat Grand

• Make Ag Connections: Ag breakfast on March 26

• Consider Your Plans: Ag estate planning workshop on March 27

• Learn about Local Agriculture: Tread of Pioneers Brown Bag on March 28

• Have Fun Supporting Ag: Western BBQ Special Ag Night on March 28

• Eat Local – Local restaurants hosting special menu items in support of CAA and National Ag Week, complete list at www.communityagalliance.org

Also watch for our National Ag Week insert in the Steamboat Today, street banner, sponsor posters in business windows, government proclamations supporting local agriculture and displays in bookstores, libraries and museums all over the Yampa Valley

If you’d like to get involved and join our efforts, there is still time! Align your business with agriculture and become a sponsor. Or support our new member campaign with an annual membership. Call us at 970-879-4370 or online at www.communityagalliance.org.

In addition to National Ag Week, CAA is proud to unveil an updated logo and message. Since 1999, CAA has been dedicated to local agriculture. In the fall of 2012, the CAA Board began a strategic planning process that resulted in organizational clarity and focus.

The updated logo and messaging looks “new” but CAA’s organization mission and focus remains the same. We are committed to value of local agriculture. Ensuring the vitality and continuity of agriculture in the Yampa Valley is our primary focus. Through actions and programs, we LEAD COMMUNITY to GROW AGRICULTURE and to CREATE ALLIANCE among those with shared passions and goals.

The next time you eat, drink or wear clothing…thank a local rancher and farmer!
