Steamboat Springs Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball needed just a pair of seniors and a roster loaded with juniors to advance past the first round in the state playoffs.
And on Tuesday, those two upperclassmen — Carter Kounovsky and Zach Dunklin — were honored for their season-long efforts, being named first-team all-Western Slope League performers.
Steamboat juniors Garrett Bye and Matthew Lanning garnered honorable mention all league.
Kounovsky — who started 71 straight games to cap off his Sailors career dating back to his sophomore season — led Steamboat in scoring in 2013-14, averaging a little more than 10 points per game and nearly four rebounds per contest.
Kounovsky opened the 2013-14 season scoring in double digits for seven of the Sailors’ first nine games. He scored his season high during the stretch with 23 points against Montrose on Dec. 13. In league play, Kounovsky scored 19 points against both Palisade and Delta.
Dunklin proved to be the Sailors’ clutch 3-point ace this season, sinking 36 shots from beyond the arc to lead the team. He averaged more than seven points per game and shot 36 percent from 3-point land.
Dunklin’s best outing this season came Feb. 7 in a 61-54 win against Palisade, during which Dunklin dropped a game-high 27 points. He also pitched in 14 points Jan. 21 against league champion Rifle.
Bye has another season to go with the Sailors but averaged 7.2 points per game and a team-high average of six rebounds to grab honorable mention. Bye also averaged nearly two blocks per contest.
Lanning was second on the team in scoring, averaging nine points per game, including a season-high 18 points against Montrose on Dec. 13.
Joining Kounovsky and Dunklin on the boys’ first team was Rifle's Tanner Quick and Trent Brown and Wyatt Robinson, Glenwood Springs’ Jared Gambrel and Cameron Horning, Palisade’s Skylar Miller and Zach Marengo, Summit’s Thomas DeBonville, Delta’s Eian Baier and Battle Mountain’s Jerry Carrasco.
