It wasn't the District Tournament showing the Soroco High School girls baskebtall team was looking for, but the Rams still have the state tournament coming up and their coach thinks the weekend taught his young team some valuable lessons.

Playing in the third-place game Saturday, Soroco succumed to a slow start, eventually losing to No. 3 Hotchkiss, 58-51.

The Rams were down by as much as 10 points right off the bat in the first quarter, and trailed by nine at halftime.

Head coach David Bruner said his squad managed to get the deficit to one point with about two minutes to go, but two empty possessions cost the Rams down the stretch.

“They hit a shot toward the end and we had to stat fouling,” Bruner said. “They shot 11-for-14 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. They really shot well from the free throw line. I thought overall the last three quarters we played well.”

Now, the Rams turn their attention to the state playoffs, where tournament seedings will be announced Sunday afternoon. Based on Soroco's difficult schedule and its 15-win season, Bruner likes his chances.

“They felt pretty good about how they played in the district tournament,” Bruner said. “Our inexperiences showed, though. “The tournament really starts next weekend. Once you lose, you're done.”

Bruner speculated they could get a seed anywhere from 17 to 32. Only 32 teams make the tournament.
