Fire danger remains moderate going into July

— Unless something drastic happens, Routt County Emergency Management Director Bob Struble expects a July 4 holiday season free of fire restrictions.

Struble said it has been kind of a slow fire season, and none of the criteria have been met for enacting restrictions, which can make it illegal to build a campfire because the risk of wildfires is high.

The wildfire risk remains at moderate for the region, which includes Routt, Jackson and Grand counties.

"It's kind of a slow fire season," Struble said. "The high country is still in OK shape."

In West Routt County, where it typically dries out faster, firefighters have responded to four wildfires this year, Fire Chief Dal Leck said. The most recent one occurred Monday evening near mile marker 19 on Routt County Road 27 on grass and shrub land owned by Twentymile Coal Co. Leck said he thought the fire was started by a lightning strike. About 1 acre of vegetation burned.

"It was not a real fast burner, which was good," Leck said. "I think that's real conducive to what the conditions are right now."

In its one-month outlook, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is calling for normal temperatures, and there is an enhanced probability of above average precipitation along most of the Colorado Rockies.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, Routt County is not experiencing drought conditions.
