Steamboat U14 baseball team slips in semis

— It was another strong weekend of play for Steamboat’s U14 baseball team this weekend at a tournament in Eagle, but the squad came up just short of the championship game.

Steamboat won both of its Saturday games in pool play, beating New Castle, 4-2, then Edwards, 11-0. The squad got strong pitching in both games, a complete-game, seven-inning effort from Theo Hansen against New Castle, then another complete game — this one six innings — from Sean Patten against Edwards.

Edwards got its revenge, however, topping Steamboat, 14-6, in Sunday’s semifinal game.

“Our hitting troubles from (Saturday) continued, but unfortunately, despite good pitching for the most part, our defense did not hold up like it did Saturday,” coach Rob Fitzhugh said. “The guys played hard and brought the game back to within distance at 9-6, but Edwards hit the ball well in the fifth inning and broke the game open.”

The team now returns to play in Steamboat. It will participate in the Mountain Magic baseball tournament.
