Residents advised not to let strangers into homes

— The Steamboat Springs Police Department is advising residents to be careful of who they invite into their homes.

In recent days, a group of people has been in Steamboat selling magazine subscriptions, sometimes using aggressive tactics or lying.

In one case, a female claimed to be raising money for the Steamboat softball team, and she tried to sell magazines to a Steamboat softball coach. The coach called police.

Sgt. Scott Middleton said the people selling the magazines are breaking the law because they do not have a city sales tax license and special-use permit.

The people also have been asking to come into homes to use people's bathrooms. Middleton said in past years thefts have occurred after the people were invited into homes.
