Ray Heid, 76

Q. When were you in the club and what discipline?

A. There is a picture in the display at the top of the gondola of me, and on the back of the picture, my mother, Ruby Heid, wrote, “Ray’s first ski jumping meet at 2 1/2 years old,” so that must have been 1939 or 1940 when I joined the SSWSC. I skied all four events: downhill, slalom, jumping and cross-country.

Q. Who were your friends in the club?

A. My best friends were my little brother Delby Heid and my cousin Loris Werner. We spent a lot of time “timber bashing.” Now, they call it tree skiing.

Q. What is your favorite club memory?

A. My favorite club memories were the summer ski jumping meets. We would jump in Steamboat on straw and crushed ice on July Fourth, then in Estes Park on straw and snow they brought down from Trail Ridge Road and then in Deadwood, S.D., on straw and ice.

Q. What are you doing now?

A. Because of the SSWSC, I had a four-year full ski scholarship at the University of Wyoming, where I skied all four disciplines. I later became the head ski coach at the University of Wyoming. Then I went to New Mexico to train the Apache Indians to run a ski area and was in the retail business for 21 years. In 1986, my family and I returned to Steamboat to run Del’s Triangle 3 Ranch.

Q. What impact did the club have on you?

A. With my dad, Bob Heid, myself and my two kids, Perk and Hillary, and my grandkids, Sawyer and Bailey Gander, we are now four generations of SSWSC.
