Steamboat Springs The Soroco High School girls basketball team on Friday picked up what coach David Bruner said was one of its best wins in years.
The Rams traveled to play Belleview Christian School, one of the best teams in Class 1A, and came away with a 47-46 win.
“We played the best game we’ve played all year,” Bruner said. “We were able to come out with a close win against a really good team.”
The Rams got 17 points from Jessica Rossi and 13 from DaKota Bruner. David Bruner also pointed to Rossi and Jacey Schegel for a big performance on the boards against a team that was taller than Soroco at every position, and Hayley Johnson and Morgan George, who locked down Belleview’s leading scorer, holding her nearly 10 points below her average.
“We had nine girls who played, so it was a good, team win for us,” Bruner said.
The team did find out late last week it would be without sophomore forward Briana Peterson for the duration of the season. She reinjured the same knee that sidelined her a year ago.
Friday, however, the Rams, 9-3, showed they’d make the most of the team they had left.
“Since I’ve been coaching, that’s one of the bigger wins we’ve had,” Bruner said.
The Rams next play at 5 p.m. Monday at home against Steamboat Springs High School’s junior varsity team, a game meant to replace a canceled contest against South Park. The boys will play Steamboat’s JV at 6:30 p.m.
