It was a good day for two Steamboat Springs snowboarders competing in the X Games, but a rough one for another.
Mick Dierdorff advanced through Thursday’s qualification round of the snowboard cross event in Aspen, earning a spot in today’s finals, which will be televised online starting at 12:30 p.m. on ESPN 3.
Dierdorff placed seventh in his heat, comfortably advancing to today’s bracket. To make the finals, he’ll need to advance several times, first through the quarterfinals, then the semifinals.
Benji Farrow, a former member of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, also qualified, advancing to the finals in men’s snowboard super-pipe. He finished fourth with a score of 75.00.
Taylor Gold, meanwhile, wasn’t able to capitalize on his success in the U.S. Olympic Team qualifying events. He wasn’t able to land a clean run on either of his attempts in the super-pipe, finishing with a best-run high score of 33.33.
Iouri Podladtchikov, one of the top threats to medal at the Olympics, was the top qualifer of the eight riders to advance. Ben Ferguson was second with a score of 80.00, and the Olympic-bound Danny Davis was third at 77.00. Louie Vito, Scotty James, Yiwei Zhang and Greg Bretz also qualified for Sunday’s finals.
The women’s super-pipe finals, featuring Steamboat’s Arielle Gold, are set for Saturday night.
