SSWSC Century Mark: Birgitta Wiik-Lindgren

Athletes and alumni look back on 100 years of memories

Birgitta Wiik-Lindgren

Q. When were you in the club and what discipline?

A. 1968 to 1974, cross-country skiing.

Q. Who were your friends in the club?

A. Our team consisted of Pat and Mike Gleason, Greg and Gary Crawford, Jeff Davis, Chris McNeill and Mark Kinney. I was the only girl.

Q. What is your favorite club memory?

A. The annual fundraiser for the SSWSC was making Christmas wreaths to sell. Marie Bowes was the chairwomen for that project. Many athletes would spend hours at Marie’s house after training making wreaths to sell. This project was definitely a group effort for both Alpine and Nordic athletes. This project was  also a good way to spend time with other athletes of all ages. At that time, there was only Alpine and Nordic disciplines in the club.

Q. What are you doing now?

A. I operate the Steamboat Ski Touring Center and The Haymaker Nordic Center.

Q. What impact did the club have on you?

A. SSWSC instilled a passion for skiing, built self-esteem, confidence and pride, taught determination and supported dreams to become the best athlete you could be. Skiing is a lifetime sport and a lifestyle. I have been fortunate to be able to make skiing my way of life, and I encourage others to enjoy the  sport as well. Thank you, SSWSC.
