— They were fast, and there were plenty of them.

The Steamboat Springs High School boys Alpine skiing team overwhelmed its competition Friday. Competing at Howelsen Hill in downtown Steamboat in a slalom race, the Sailors packed four racers into the top 10 and won the event.

“I was super excited for the guys,” Steamboat coach Jim Winn said. “They’ve been working really hard at slalom. I’m just like, wow, in awe.”

Peter White was the team’s top performer. He zoomed in and took the lead during the second run. Nederland’s Owen Foster flew past him a moment later to win the event, but White still finished second, about three seconds back.

“Peter’s terribly sick and he still pulls off a second place,” Winn said.

Mike Skladanowsk, of Clear Creek High School, was third.

Steamboat’s Rio Graab was fourth, Andreas Foulk was fifth, and Rick Walters 10th.

The Sailors also got strong finishes from Brodie Riley, 11th, Danny Kramer, 12th, Matt Genelin, 13th, Micah Gibbons, 26th, Aidan Gibbs, 27th, and Charlie Fisher, 52nd.

Steamboat won with 172 points. Nederland was the second-place team with 163 and Aspen was third with 161.

On the girls side, Aspen ran away with the competition, claiming two the top two individual spots and three more in the top six.

Hanna Mass won the race. Anna Patterson was second, and Nederland’s Bailey Kuechenme was third.

Steamboat’s only finisher was a strong one: Lindsey Adler was ninth.

“As a coach, there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing everyone perform so well,” Winn said. “Everyone is improving and it gives me great hope.”

The team’s next stop is a giant slalom race in Aspen on Friday.
