Scott Wedel: Consider solutions

The editorial “The true cost of recycling” falsely states that the closest materials recovery facility is in Denver. That is the closest MRF owned and operated by Waste Management.

There is a much closer MRF located at the Eagle County Landfill at mile marker 2 on Highway 131. It is open to the public. It is a multi-million dollar facility with advanced equipment. They do not pay for materials, but neither do they charge for materials being dropped off.

I have been told that Waste Management, as a matter of corporate policy, only hauls recyclable materials to Waste Management recycling facilities. Thus, in terms of recycling services provided by Waste Management, those recyclable materials will be hauled to Denver.

I suggest that the community needs to consider solutions for recycling services that are able to utilize the much closer Eagle County MRF.

You're right Scott. I have used Eagle County and it is a great facility. I was under the impression it was free to Eagle county residents but a small charge if not. It is just a couple of miles this side of Wolcott.

Waste management is going to collect and haul to Wolcott and then give it away. My math seems a little fuzzy.

From tipping fees at the dump collected by the county, we pay Waste Management for the Green Machine and to haul our recyclables to Denver.

The Eagle County recycling facility is free for the citizens of everywhere. It is currently used by cities outside of Eagle County.
