Steamboat Springs The hunt to fill one of Steamboat Springs' most coveted jobs is down to three finalists.
In a few weeks, the city expects to hire the next leader of its Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services department.
City Manager Deb Hinsvark said the three finalists for the job are scheduled to be in Steamboat Jan.23 for extensive interviews and to meet with parks and recreation staff.
The finalists include Leah Rockwell, the assistant parks and recreation director for the city of West Palm Beach, Andy Stine, the director of facilities and regional museums for History Colorado, and John Overstreet, who currently is Steamboat's interim parks and recreation director.
The resumes for all three finalists include many years of experience in the parks and recreation world.
Near the top of his resume, Overstreet says he has experience managing a $22 million operating budget and overseeing the operations and maintenance of more than 20,000 acres of parks and open space in the city and county of Denver.
Rockwell touts her record of reducing West Palm Beach's operating budget by $2 million during the recession while keeping service reductions to a minimum.
And with History Colorado, Stine says he oversees nine revenue-generating museums and historic sites across the state with a staff of 31 people and a $3 million budget.
"We're very pleased with the caliber of the candidates," Anne Small, the city's director of general services, recently said about the job search.
The three finalists were selected from more than 140 applicants for the job.
The Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services director position here in Steamboat became open in July after the sudden resignation of longtime director Chris Wilson.
The job is unique in that the department oversees several amenities including the Brent Romick Rodeo Arena, Howelsen Hill, the Howelsen Ice Arena and the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs.
The city’s parks division alone oversees 28 parks totaling more than 1,000 acres.
Hinsvark said the agenda for the candidates includes a series of meetings with the city's management team as well as meetings with the parks and recreation staff.
She expects the city will make a hire shortly after the candidates visit.
