Steamboat Springs There's still that brand new building smell at Casey's Pond Senior Living.
But the staff isn't wasting any time to innovate as it launches a new program they think will benefit many community members.
The S.A.F.E. Harbor day services program will launch Wednesday and offer local caregivers a chance to have their loved ones cared for at Casey's Pond on a temporary basis.
The program, which runs daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., is designed for seniors who have memory loss or a senior who is in an assisted living environment.
It also runs 365 days per year, even during holidays.
While at Casey's Pond, guests will partake in a number of different activities, many designed for mental stimulation.
Casey's Pond Marketing Director Bryna Krauth said the guests will receive all the benefits of the center's safe, nurturing environment.
“There hasn't been this sort of sophisticated program in place in the city of Steamboat Springs,” Krauth said.
She said early interest in the program has been strong, especially for full-time caregivers who need a temporary break or have an appointment.
The program is hourly and costs $20 per hour.
Krauth said it also can be utilized by people who are visiting Steamboat from out of town.
The one thing to keep in mind is some paperwork must be done before a guest can begin to utilize it.
Krauth recommends giving Casey's Pond at least 24 hours notice.
Services are offered in the center's Grove and Harbor areas.
The staff at the Harbor, which offers the memory care services, are trained to give daily support to people with memory loss, including those who have dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Residents also will be able to participate in community driven activities, such as planting in a community garden.
“What we started learning in this community is there are several caregivers, spouses and maybe an adult child who are working during the day, traveling and still sometimes providing 24-hour care to someone,” Krauth said. “This can be incredibly draining. Knowing that, we developed the S.A.F.E. Harbor program where a loved one can bring loved one to Casey's Pond.”
