Steamboat boys can’t stop Delta late

Joel Reichenberger

— Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball coach Luke DeWolfe said he’s hoping his team can learn a lesson from an upsetting 47-46 loss Saturday on the road against Delta.

Delta sank a pair of free throws in the final seconds to tie the game, then take the lead.

“We were tight the whole way,” DeWolfe said. “It was a good game, and we played well, but we made some errors, and they came on strong and hit some shots. They got us right at the end.”

Brody King led Steamboat with 15 points. Carter Kounovsky and Garrett Bye each had 10 while Matt Lanning added nine.

It looked like they’d have enough midway through the third quarter as the Sailors blew open what had been a close game. They didn’t blow it open quite enough though, and as a result, the team dropped to 1-1 on their weekend road trip.

“Delta is big, physical and relentless on the offensive boards. They’re a strong team,” DeWolfe said. “They’re definitely a team near the top of the conference. At the top of our conference, it could be any team on a given night.

“Getting some consistency and learning form this loss is important,” DeWolfe added.
