Steamboat Springs For those in Northwest Colorado planning to take advantage of retail marijuana sales, make sure to stay south of the Wyoming border.
Any amount of marijuana, whether dried or in plant form, is illegal to possess in Wyoming, a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol stated.
From Steamboat Springs, Routt County Road 129 eventually crosses into Wyoming, and Baggs, Wyo., north of Craig is about an 1 1/2 hours away.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol currently does not plan to increase patrols along the state line to watch for those transporting marijuana, the release states.
Possession of 3 ounces or less of marijuana is a misdemeanor in Wyoming with a fine of as much as $1,000 and/or as many as 12 months behind bars. Possessing more than 3 ounces is a felony punishable by five years in prison and/or a fine of as much as $10,000.
Colorado residents 21 years and older are allowed to purchase 1 ounce of marijuana at a time and can possess the same amount.
Possession of drug paraphernalia also is a violation in the Wyoming, the release states.
The release also states that misdemeanor violations did increase slightly along the border after Colorado allowed medical marijuana.
