9-year-old boy dies in North Routt snowmobile accident

— Ben Craig Zamzow, son of North Routt County residents Carroll and Darren Zamzow, died Wednesday in a snowmobile accident in North Routt County.

At about 2:45 p.m., emergency responders were called to a report of a 9-year-old who had been involved in an accident on a U.S. Forest Service road in the Crane Park area. Crane Park is north of Columbine.

Routt County Undersheriff Ray Birch said Ben was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center and later was pronounced dead.

Deputies on Wednesday night still were investigating how the accident occurred north of Columbine.

Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg said that Ben's family obviously was upset and that he was riding with a group of four when the accident occurred.

Birch said it was not avalanche related.

"It's a very tragic circumstance," Ryg said.
