Steamboat briefs: More than 12K visitors are expected in town Saturday

About 12,127 visitors are expected to be in town Saturday, according to the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association’s lodging barometer.

That is less than what has been projected for most of the year so far, including Presidents Day weekend which had 16,030 pillows being slept on by visitors. That equated to 98 percent capacity at area lodging.

Saturday’s figure represents 74 percent capacity at area lodging properties, with downtown occupancy at 100 percent. On the mountain, hotels are forecast at 82 percent capacity and condos are expected to be 66 percent full.

Lodging is expected to dip to 9,383 on Wednesday.

The Chamber’s lodging barometer is based on survey data from local lodging properties. Its primary function is to help businesses determine staffing levels during the winter and summer tourism seasons. Actual lodging occupancy levels tend to increase from the forecast levels as a result of last-minute bookings.

"About 12,127 visitors are expected to be in town Saturday, according to the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association’s lodging barometer."

And the misleading information continues unabated. They know the lodging barometer is not predicting that number of tourists, but that doesn't stop them.

The lodging barometer counts the number of pillows in occupied units. So a motel room with two beds counts as 4 pillows even when occupied by 2 people.

This is just the clearest example of the misinformation fed to the public by the newspaper in cooperation from the Chamber.
