Steamboat Springs Even when her team is playing well, Hayden High School girls basketball coach Michelle Wilkie said a lack of consistency during the course of four quarters is plaguing her roster.
Friday night proved again to be one of those inconsistent outings as the Tigers were edged at West Grand, 58-53.
Hayden built a first-quarter lead but trailed by five at halftime. On top of that, a third-quarter flurry by West Grand dug Hayden into a hole it just couldn’t climb out of.
“We came out (in the) third quarter, and West Grand got some quick baskets on us,” Wilkie said. “It was a 10-point difference at one point, and we came back, but it was just too much, too late.”
Kara Cozzens and Olivia Zehner led the Hayden charge with 12 points apiece, while Taylor Hagar chipped in 10. Wilkie said her bench was a big contributor in the close contest.
“All the kids that played scored,” Wilkie said. “I was very pleased with that.”
The loss dropped the Tigers to 5-9 on the season. Their next contest is at 1 p.m. Saturday against North Park at home.
