Steamboat Briefs: Scholarship awarded to Lowell Whiteman alumna

Leydon Thornton, of Steamboat Springs, received a $2,000 Bonhomme Scholarship from the University of Montana.

Thornton, a 2009 graduate of The Lowell Whiteman School, is the daughter of Michael and Shauna Thornton, of Houston. She is a senior at Montana majoring in environmental studies.

Tickets for the 2nd annual Sorel Soiree on sale Friday

Tickets for the second annual Sorel Soiree, celebrating 100 years of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, are on sale. The fundraiser will be held Friday at Vanatta Field at Howelsen Hill beginning at 7 p.m. The cost is $85 per person, and tickets can be purchased at Howelsen Hill beginning at 3:30 p.m. Sales for SSWSC members start at 3 p.m. SSWSC medallions can be purchased for $250. The Sorel Soiree includes dining, drinking and dancing. There also will be a large screen TV at the event so those attending can watch the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Winter Carnival is seeking volunteers for street events

Winter Carnival is looking for volunteers to help with the 101st Winter Carnival street events. Volunteers are needed as starters, flaggers and timers, and shifts run from 8:45 a.m. to noon, 8:45 to 10:45 a.m. or 8 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday.
