Steamboat Springs With Steamboat Springs High School lacrosse season tryouts just three weeks away and the first game shortly thereafter, new head coach Jay Lattimore is doing what he can to fill out his program’s staff to usher in a new era.
Lattimore — who takes over for Bob Hiester, who enjoyed an illustrious lacrosse coaching career with Steamboat and other schools — is on the immediate search for his lead assistant coach. Lattimore said he has contacted a candidate for the paid position but also is focused on recruiting a number of volunteers to help push the program along.
“I’m looking for assistants,” Lattimore said. “I have the head coaches in place, but on the varsity level, I’m looking for assistants with more knowledge. At the lower levels, anyone interesting in helping is a plus.”
Lattimore inherited a Steamboat program that has made the playoffs each of the last five years, including a 12-3 season just a year ago. One of his primary goals is to continue that string of success and build the program from the lowest level to varsity.
“With me, it’s definitely going to be important in the lower leagues,” Lattimore said. “We have to build a foundation. This year, since it’s my first year, a lot of my focus is on the varsity team, but I still want to build on the lower levels for next year and years to come.”
Those willing to volunteer their time, especially at practice, Lattimore said, will help produce future success for the Sailors.
There is a parent committee in place to help handle fundraising and game day type of stuff, Lattimore said. Community support in all forms is key.
“With (the season) three or four weeks away, it’s at that point where we need a couple more people to step up, especially at practices,” Lattimore said.
Jake and Andy Flax are leading the charge for the Sailors’ junior varsity squad. Kevin Bertrand, a 2008 Steamboat graduate, will help guide the freshman team.
“They came up through the program so a lot of kids know them,” Lattimore said about his freshman and JV coaches. “That’s a big help for me.”
