— The name Borden has become synonymous with fireworks in this town.

But beneath the extravagant, bold fireworks display each year at the Winter Carnival is a humble couple that very much enjoyed watching their two kids grow up participating in the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.

Tim and Janet Borden are the club’s 2014 grand marshals, and they now join a roster of prominent couples in town that have received the honor.

The Bordens never have missed a Winter Carnival parade, and they have a little something extra to look forward to in this year’s.

“It’s a real honor for both Janet and myself,” Tim Borden said. “We’re flattered they would select us. We just love the town of Steamboat Springs.”

Tim and Janet moved to Steamboat in 1974.

Their son Scott and daughter Christy started with the Winter Sports Club at a young age, and they skied in the Alpine program until they graduated high school.

Tim Borden said his claim to fame in the skiing world came in the early 1980s when he and his son Scott beat Pete Wither and his son in the father-son downhill event.

Borden credits Pete’s decision to use a longer and bigger ski with the victory.

“That was pretty big for us,” Borden said.

Borden also was a member of the U.S. bobsled team that competed in 1989 and 1990.

They built a practice track with a bobsled on wheels behind the Brent Romick Rodeo Arena, and then started a sledding run at Howelsen Hill in the 1980s.

Janet Borden ski raced for several years in the ’80s.

She said she was surprised at being named a grand marshal.

“It just seems like such an honor,” she said. “What we saw with the Winter Sports Club was it gave these kids a lot of self-confidence and self-esteem.”
