Steamboat Springs The ball just bounced the other way. Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball coach Luke DeWolfe said Saturday’s home game against Rifle was there for the taking, but the Sailors weren’t able to take it, falling 45-35.
“We played well the entire game. You had two teams that just ground it out and it comes down to the last possessions,” DeWolfe said. “We had chances late in the game, but just didn’t take advantage of them.”
The team shot 7-of-15 from the free throw line, which hurt down the stretch.
Rifle got revenge in the game for the 55-33 win Steamboat took in Rifle two weeks ago.
“They made some good changes from the last time we played,” DeWolfe said. “They did a good job defending our high post play and taking away some of our guard play and the looks we had from 3-point last time.
“Plus, they were hitting more shots than they did last time.”
Steamboat, 9-5, next plays Tuesday at Summit in a make-up game that was rescheduled from last week.
