Steamboat Springs Another tournament meant another set of solid rounds from the boys of the Steamboat Springs High School golf team Wednesday.
The squad produced four rounds in the 70s while playing at Devil’s Thumb Golf Course in Delta, sliding the team into second place.
Durango won the day, besting Steamboat’s team score of 223 with a 220.
“Considering none of us had seen the course before, I was really proud of the guys for stepping up and playing well,” assistant coach Andrew Donner said.
Donner advised his players to dial it back on the undulating, unfamiliar course, and that paid off.
Spencer Petersen placed third overall with a score of 74. Brandon Martin tied that score, shooting 74, but missed the overall finish by a tiebreaker.
Andrew Firestone was just back, in at 75, and Will Firestone shot a 77. Britt Walton shot 80.
The team is back in action Thursday with a large tournament in Montrose that will feature many of the teams the Sailors will see later this season at the regional tournament.
“It’s probably the strongest field we’ll see outside of regionals,” Donner said. “The kids are doing great and every round we’re getting four guys into the 70s. The rest of the teams in our region know that when we show up, a strong team is coming their way.”
