Steamboat Springs School Board to revisit 2015-16 school calendar options

— The Steamboat Springs School Board will continue to review options for the 2015-16 school calendar and reveal the results of a demographic study during its meeting Monday night.

The board will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Steamboat Springs School District office board room, 325 Seventh St.

District officials have narrowed the 2015-16 calendar down to three options since last discussing the issue at the June 2 board meeting. The options include varying start and end dates, parent-teacher conference scheduling and addressing whether to have a full week off for Blues Break in February.

The three options are:

• Option A: This option is a calendar that begins Aug. 19, a week earlier than in previous years, with classes ending June 2, 2016. This option has 26 full weeks of school within a 38-week calendar. It includes the traditional three days off for Thanksgiving, two-week winter break, one-week February Blues Break and one-week spring break in April.

• Option C: The district administration is in favor of this option, which includes the same breaks as Option A, but with classes beginning later, on Aug. 26, and ending later, on June 9. This option includes 25 full weeks of classes in a 38-week calendar and is a traditional calendar similar to this year's.

• Option E: This option extends 26 full weeks out of a 37-week calendar, with classes beginning Aug. 24 and ending earlier than usual, on May 27. This calendar schedules a staff work day on the Monday after winter break, extending a block of time off for students. The February break is reduced to two days (Presidents Day and the Tuesday afterward). Parent-teacher conferences will be scheduled only for one Friday each in the fall and spring, rather than a Thursday followed by a teacher off-day, as in the other two schedule options.

Steamboat Springs School District Superintendent Brad Meeks said that Option C is essentially the same calendar the district is using this year.

“It's pretty much the traditional calendar that we've had,” Meeks said. District staff "are supportive, they're fine with just staying with the traditional calendar.”

City Recreation Manager Susan Petersen, a parent of two district students, said Sunday that she had yet to review the options but was likely to favor Option E because the shortened February break would lead to an early end to the year. She also favored holding parent-teacher conferences on Fridays to avoid having two, three-day weeks during the year.

Petersen and a handful of other parents met with district staff in June to discuss calendar options after a June 2 board meeting failed to produce a decision from the board.

“I'm pleased Dr. Meeks has taken the time throughout the summer to take another look at the issue,” Petersen said. “You're never going to please everyone.”

The board is expected to discuss the calendar options Monday night and vote on a new calendar during the next meeting Sept. 8.

Also on the agenda Monday night are the results of a demographic study the district conducted during the summer.

A demographer with Western Demographics Inc. assessed census and enrollment data during the summer and met with city officials and Realtors to make predictions about the district's future enrollment. The study cost the district roughly $6,000, Meeks said.

With more than 2,400 students expected in class Tuesday, the district is looking at its highest enrollment ever.

Other items on the agenda include the approval of several new teachers and other employees hired by the district this summer and an overview of the Transitional Colorado Assessment Program results.
