So maybe it wasn’t three consecutive second-place finishes for the Steamboat Springs High School golf team this week during a road swing to Grand Junction and Eagle Valley.
Sailors coach Steve Dodson said he received news Thursday morning that a player from Fruita Monument had announced he’d signed an incorrect scorecard in a Tuesday tournament at The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa. That bumped the school from a one-stroke advantage of Steamboat and left the Sailors as the tournament’s winners.
“It was nice that the kid came forward and admitted his mistake,” Dodson said. “It’s a hard lesson, but it’s happened to my kids before, too. From that day forward, they check their scores two or three times.”
Steamboat emerged as the winner with a score of 233. Montezuma-Cortez was second with 235 and Grand Junction was third at 237. Fruita Monument fell to seventh, at 253.
