Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School golf team wasn’t quite as hot as it was Monday at the start of a three-day swing of competitions. It still was good enough for the same place, however.
The Sailors were again second, competing in Grand Junction at Redlands Mesa Golf Course. The team ended up with 233 strokes, one back of Fruita Monument, first with 232.
“We did come out on top again for the Class 4A school,” coach Steve Dodson said. “All in all, it was a pretty good effort.”
Spencer Petersen led the way for the team with a 77. He said his round was even better for the final few holes.
“I was even through 15 holes and then I made a couple stupid decisions,” he said. “Still, I finished 5 over par, which wasn’t bad. I was hitting the ball as good as I’ve hit it all year. I’m playing good, and as long as I keep it consistent, I’m happy.”
Brandon Martin, Will Firestone and Andrew Firestone each were just one shot back with 78. Britt Walton had an 81.
“We played good,” Petersen said. “Our hopes were a little higher today, but second is OK.”
The team plays again Wednesday to wrap up the road trip with a stop at the Gypsum Creek Golf Course.
