Kiwanis is hosting School Board candidate forum

The Kiwanis Club of Steamboat Springs will host a Steamboat Springs School Board candidate forum from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Steamboat Springs Community Center, 1605 Lincoln Ave. Registration is required by noon today by calling 970-879-0633. The cost for lunch is $6 or $3 for those older than 60.

Atmos Energy cautions customers of utility scam Atmos Energy is warning customers about the latest utility scam where customers are contacted by scammers demanding payment of past due balances, according to a news release.

Atmos Energy does contact customers with past due balances by phone to offer payment options. Atmos Energy will verify all account information before proceeding to take any payment.

Atmos Energy offers the following payment options:

LIFT-UP of Routt County is needs thrift shop volunteers

LIFT-UP of Routt County is in need of volunteers to work in the thrift store and donation center at 2125 Curve Court in Steamboat Springs. Volunteers must be able to lift 25 pounds, and duties include sorting and pricing donated items, stocking shelves and straightening up display areas. Shifts are available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.

The LIFT-UP Food Bank also is seeking volunteers to work as desk clerks. Volunteers must have computer and interpersonal skills and must be able to honor client confidentiality. Shifts are available between 1 and 5 p.m. on weekdays.

VNA offers services to help smoking cessation

The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association would like to remind readers that secondhand smoke and thirdhand smoke (tobacco residue in carpet, clothes, cars, etc.) can cause serious health problems in children, nonsmoking adults and pets, including cancer, heart disease and asthma. There are multiple support options to help smokers protect themselves and their loved ones from potentially fatal illnesses:

■ The Colorado QuitLine offers free personalized cessation phone support for smokers. Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

■ The SmokefreeTXT program provides free personalized text message support. Text the word “quit” to 47848.

■ The VNA offers counseling with a tobacco cessation specialist in Steamboat Springs or Craig. There is no cost for the service. To speak with a counselor, call 970-871-7634.

Suicide Prevention Advocates program volunteers needed

Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide is in need of volunteers to become part of its Suicide Prevention Advocates program at Yampa Valley Medical Center. The program is designed to help those who have attempted suicide or are having thoughts of suicide and have been hospitalized.
