As part of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ ongoing implementation of the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011, the VA has developed a comprehensive toolkit for veterans and employers about the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program and the VOW to Hire Heroes Act. The act expands education and training opportunities for veterans and provides tax credits for employers who hire veterans with service-related disabilities. Free winter coats available to area residents in need
Hayden Congregational Church in conjunction with Love INC will have free winter coats available for those in need from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Oct. 7 and 9 at the church, 202 E. Jefferson Ave., Hayden.
School board candidate forum slated for Tuesday
The Kiwanis Club of Steamboat Springs will host a Steamboat Springs School Board candidate forum from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Steamboat Springs Community Center, 1605 Lincoln Ave. Registration is required by noon Monday by calling 970-879-0633. The cost for lunch is $6 or $3 for those older than 60.
Residents reminded about emergency preparedness
The Routt County Office of Emergency Management would like to remind readers that September is National Preparedness Month. Local, state and federal emergency management officials urge residents to take the opportunity to update their disaster plans.
Residents should prepare an emergency kit, make a plan and be informed about emergencies that can happen in the community and the appropriate ways to respond. Find tools to prepare for any emergency by visiting the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Ready Campaign website at www.ready.gov.

Steamboat Kiwanis club seeking new members
