Exhausted Steamboat volleyball team falls in 5 sets at Eagle Valley

— The hot start the Steamboat Springs High School volleyball team jumped to in league play hit another hurdle Saturday as the Sailors fell in five sets to Eagle Valley, a team the Sailors beat, 3-1, less than a week ago.

This one didn't go down like Thursday's 3-0 loss to Glenwood Springs, however, and in that, Steamboat coach Wendy Hall found positives.

"Dang it, we battled today, and after Thursday's performance, or lack there of, I was pleased with our fight and effort," she said Saturday. "We came out ready to play."

Indeed. Steamboat won the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-22. That was the high tide, however, as Eagle Valley took the next three, 25-21, 25-16 and 15-11.

Hall pointed to a grueling schedule that's left only one day of practice between the past three games.

"We've had two road trips in the last three days, and having just a single practice between matches makes it difficult," she said. "There are things in our game that we need to spend time in practice breaking down and building back up, but with that schedule, we are spending the time preparing for the next team.

"That caught up with us today."

It doesn't get any better early this week as Steamboat plays Tuesday at home one of its most difficult challenges of the season: league-leading Battle Mountain. The Huskies, who haven't dropped a set to a league opponent this season, are led by senior hitter LaRose Currie, perhaps the top hitter in the league.

"I told the team to be excited for this challenge," Hall said. "I hope that's the way they approach it. It's fun to play against really good players, and if you can win a few here and there, it's very fun."
