Steamboat briefs: Twenty Days of Roaring 20s trivia begins Saturday

Bud Werner Memorial Library is hosting a Twenty Days of Roaring 20s trivia contest as part of the 2013 One Book Steamboat community reading of “The Great Gatsby.” The free trivia contest runs from Saturday to Oct. 10. Questions will be posted daily at the front desk of the library, 1289 Lincoln Ave., and on the library’s Facebook page, Bud Werner Memorial Library Events. Each correctly answered question gets the participant’s name entered in a prize drawing, which includes 10 copies of an out-of-print edition of the book. Yampa Valley Medical Center health fair is Saturday

Yampa Valley Medical Center’s annual health fair is from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the hospital. The event features low-cost blood tests and immunizations, free health screenings, safety education and children’s activities. Sixteen local, county and state agencies will be represented at the fair along with 21 YVMC departments and nine medical provider offices. Attendees will be able to practice using a fire extinguisher, meet Sadie the Safety Saurus, take a look inside the Flight For Life Colorado helicopter and go through the Fire Safe House.

Walk-ins for blood tests are welcome, and a 12-hour fast is recommended. Check and cash is accepted for payment. The cost of the blood tests is $35 for a health profile that includes cholesterol, $15 for a complete blood count, $30 for a PSA test for men only and $25 for a hemoglobin A1C test that is helpful for managing diabetes.

Community Barn Dance and Barbecue is Saturday

The sixth annual Community Barn Dance and Barbecue is from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Wandering Creek Ranch, 33850 Routt County Road 14. The event includes live music and dancing, barbecue from Rex’s American Grill & Bar, children’s activities and a raffle. It is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs and benefits the Boys and Girls Club of Steamboat Springs.

Hayden Congregational Church will have free coats

Hayden Congregational Church in conjunction with Love INC will have free winter coats available for those in need from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30 and Oct. 2, 7 and 9 at the church, 202 E. Jefferson Ave., Hayden.

Community celebration is Sept. 28 at top of gondola

Come, Let’s Dance hosts a community celebration at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at the top of the gondola at Steamboat Ski Area. The event is intended to celebrate seven years of community investment in Uganda and will include cocktails, dinner and dancing. Free flu shots for veterans are available on Oct. 18

Free flu shots for Routt County veterans are from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Steamboat Springs Community Center, 1605 Lincoln Ave. To qualify, veterans should bring proof of military service or an American Legion or VFW membership card. Those serving in the Reserves or National Guard also are eligible if their units were deployed to a war zone during military conflict.

Veterans also can learn more about and sign up for Veterans Affairs health care during the flu clinic. The VA health care program meets the requirements of the Affordable Care Act, so veterans who are enrolled meet health care law coverage standards.
