— Community members who want to take advantage of free health screenings, peer inside the cockpit of a Flight for Life helicopter or practice using a fire extinguisher without any cleanup can do all of these things and more Saturday morning at Yampa Valley Medical Center.

The hospital is launching an expanded community health and safety fair that will feature activities for adults and families.

The activities include free hearing, dental, blood pressure and vision checks as well as low-cost blood tests.

Flu shots and other vaccinations also will be offered.

“There really is something for everyone of all ages,” YVMC wellness specialist Heather Rose said.

She said some community members likely have memories from some of the older health fairs of waiting for hours at Steamboat Springs Middle School to get a blood test. But those days are long gone, she said, and waits at the latest health fairs usually are no longer than 20 to 30 minutes.

According to the hospital, the fair is a collaboration of 16 local and state agencies and 21 YVMC departments.

The free skin checks alone will involve three physicians.

This will be the sixth year the fair has been hosted at the hospital, but its history dates back more than 20 years, Rose said.

Including the days of blood testing leading up to the fair, she said it can reach about 1,000 people in the community each year.

The fair runs from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, and all of the activities take place at the hospital campus.
