Jeffrey Bongiorno

Jeffrey Kiowa Bongiorno, 28, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of felony second- and third-degree burglary and theft. His bond was set at $10,000 on Thursday, and he is due back in court at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Bongiorno had just been hired at the Shop & Hop south of Steamboat Springs city limits along U.S. Highway 40 and was being trained by an employee Tuesday night.

According to an arrest affidavit, the employee training Bongiorno thinks Bongiorno unlocked the door while they were closing, and then Bongiorno went back into the business. The affidavit states surveillance video shows that once inside the business, Bongiorno handled two donation boxes. The boxes later were found to be empty.

The business’s manager reported $65 was in an Animal Assistance donation box and $20 was in a Born Free Wildlife Rehabilitation donation box.

$10,000 bond for $85? Is that normal?

Charged with two felony counts so that is a reasonable bail based upon the charges.

But this is probably the most comical overcharging of a suspect for a while. The burglary charges seem weak because he had the keys and was there for closing up. Seems easy enough for him to say he went back in to check something as part of work and then decided to take the money.

And I guess training there is pretty minimal because apparently the training didn't include telling the new guy that there are security cameras!
