— The duo of Kelly Boniface and Nate Bird led the way for a pack of strong Steamboat Springs cyclists Saturday at the inaugural Winter Park Epic 50, a 50-mile mountain bike race.

Boniface and Bird teamed up to win the coed duo category.

“She’s one of my best friends, and we’ve been talking about doing this race together for quite a while,” Bird said. “The trail was awesome. It was mostly singletrack but very different than Steamboat. It was much rootier and rockier than riding in Steamboat, so that definitely mixed it up.”

It didn’t slow the pair. They had a combined time of 3 hours, 49 minutes and 0.8 seconds. Boniface was the only woman on the day to record one of the 25-mile laps in less than two hours.

Steamboat’s Mike Sharkey and Bec Bale were third in the same division, finishing in 4:30:29.0. Alex Pond, meanwhile, was third in the men’s pro catagory, finishing in 3:52:19.8.
