This year, collaboration is the key to an exciting new twist to Yampa Valley Medical Center’s annual community health fair. On Saturday, the hospital will launch a new Family Health and Safety Fair from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.

It’s new because we are adding kid-friendly health screenings along with our adult screenings as well as safety booths and activities.

We could not put on such an in-depth health fair without collaboration with other nonprofit agencies, service clubs, physicians, employees and community volunteers. In fact, there are 16 local, county and state agencies being represented at the fair, along with 21 Yampa Valley Medical Center departments and nine medical provider offices.

Most people attend the yearly health fair to take advantage of the low-cost blood tests, including cholesterol, glucose, thyroid, kidney function, liver function, PSA for prostate cancer, complete blood count, and hemoglobin A1C for people managing diabetes.

Advance registration and payment for blood tests are available at Walk-ins are welcome for the blood draw. Just remember to fast for 12 hours, drink plenty of water and come prepared to pay with check or cash.

Free health screenings include hearing, vision (adults and children), flu shots and immunizations including shingles, pneumonia and tetanus (adults and children), skin check, dental screening (adults and children), lung function, foot screening, height and weight, blood pressure, and a flexibility and strength assessment.

A variety of health educators and free materials will be available on topics including allergy, asthma, blood clot risk, breast health, emergency preparedness, AED training for CPR, joint replacement, advance directives, mental health, nutrition, health insurance, alcohol use by teens, Medicare counseling, bike safety, firearm safety, concussion management, drunk driving and more.

You and your family can sign up to participate in the 5-2-1-0 community health challenge through LiveWell Colorado to move more, drink fewer sugar-sweetened beverages, get less screen time and eat more fruits and veggies.

When was the last time you had to use your fire extinguisher? Come practice your technique with Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue.

Hear about iTriage, a free smartphone app that allows users to check medical symptoms, determine appropriate medical treatment and locate providers.

Other new features are the opportunities to step inside the Flight for Life Colorado helicopter and for kids to learn about safety topics with Sadie the Safety Saurus.

We appreciate the collaboration with Routt County Undersheriff Ray Birch for pulling together numerous agencies as well as the health and safety groups that are adding interesting, educational booths and activities at this year’s heath fair. We hope to see you there.
