Steamboat Springs Thursday’s tournament at Keystone Golf Course was the final tuneup for the Steamboat Springs High School golf team before it heads to the regional championship beginning Monday.
2013 Sailors boys golf schedule
Sailors head coach Steve Dodson said he would wait until Friday morning to decide the four varsity players he will take to compete at Gypsum Creek Golf Course for the right to qualify for the state championships.
Keystone, Dodson said, served as a “fun day” for his team’s final time playing together as an entire group. The field at Keystone was unlike a typical tournament in which Steamboat has competed, featuring top competition from a different part of the state.
“It attracts a lot of Front Range teams, so that’s kind of why it was fun to come to,” Dodson said. “We saw a lot of different faces. We saw some really talented golf by a lot of kids on the Front Range.”
Senior Erick Sobeck and sophomore Britt Walton each shot 78s. Casey Weston shot 84, and Andrew Firestone carded an 86.
Dodson said despite a few uncharacteristically high numbers from his group, he is confident heading into the weekend. The four selected Sailors will take off Sunday for practice rounds that afternoon and Monday, then compete for state championship slots Tuesday.
“I hit the ball really well,” Sobeck said about his Thursday round. “I feel really good heading into regionals. I think teamwise, we are very strong heading into regionals, as well.”
Dodson said the team didn’t stick around for the tournament’s final scoring at Keystone.
