2013 Sailors boys golf schedule
Steamboat Springs "Awesome" was the first word Steamboat Springs boys golf coach Steve Dodson used to describe his team’s performance Tuesday at River Valley Ranch in Carbondale.
“It wasn’t the biggest field, but I’m really happy with our results,” Dodson said. “I was pleased with how our guys beat the golf course.”
All five members of the Steamboat Springs varsity team finished in the 70s in Tuesday’s round. Britt Walton shot an even-par 72 to win the individual title. His teammate Brandon Martin was second with a 74. Erik Sobeck shot a 75, Andrew Firestone shot a 78, and Casey Weston rounded out the Steamboat scores with a 79.
As a team, the Sailors finished with a score of 221 to lead the event. Aspen placed second at 232, and Rifle was third with a 233.
“This is the first tournament I’ve won at the high school level,” Walton said after his round.
Walton said a couple of early birdies proved helpful.
“Halfway through, I was two under,” Walton said. “I bogeyed a couple of holes, but I was able to keep things together. Down the stretch, I knew I was even, so I just kept trying to score par.”
The sophomore and his coach are hoping to carry the momentum into next week when the Sailors will compete at the regional tournament at the Gypsum Creek Golf Course. But first, the team will travel to Keystone on Thursday for the regular season finale.
“I’m really excited to play that course,” Walton said. “We are playing really well as a team right now. We just want to keep that going”
Dodson agrees. He feels like the team has been gaining traction as it heads toward the regional tournament, and he is hoping the players will continue to improve.
“We’ve got some pretty good momentum going right now,” Dodson said. “It started with our tournament ( Thursday at Haymaker) and carried into our performance (Tuesday). Hopefully, we can just keep building on that.”
